PLAYER NEWS AND TRANSACTIONS DURING THE OFF-SEASON

 

February 7  Todd Frazier’s contract is official.

 

February 5  According to reports the Mets signed third baseman Todd Frazier to a two year contract worth $17 million dollars. The deal is pending a physical. Frazier hit .213 with 27 hrs and 76 rbis last season with the White Sox and the Yankees. Todd is a great leader.

 

January 31  The Mets traded Josh Smoker to the Pirates for a minor league pitcher and cash considerations.

 

January 26  Jose Reyes’s deal is now official.

 

January 25  According to a report the Mets are bringing back infielder Jose Reyes in 2018.  The deal is for one year worth $2 millions.  Reyes’s role will be as an utility man.

 

January 18  Adrian Gonzalez’s contract is now official.

 

January 17  Jay Bruce’s contract is now official.

 

January 14  According to a report, the Mets signed first baseman Adrian Gonzalez to an one year deal, pending a physical. The Mets only will pay him $500,000 because he was released by the Braves. Last season in an injury plaque year,  he hit only .242 with 3 hrs and 30 rbis with the Dodgers. Gonzalez is a proven home run hitter and great defensively. 

 

January 13  The Mets resigned the following players avoiding arbitration, they are; Matt Harvey (5.6m), Wilmer Flores (3.4m), Travis d’Arnaud (3.47m), Jeurys Familia (7.925m), Noah Syndergaard (2.975m), Hansel Robles (900,000), Jacob deGrom (7.4m), and AJ Ramos (9.225m). The only arbitration elgible player is Zack Wheeler.

 

The Mets signed pitcher Jenrry Mejia to an 1-year contract, though he remains on the Commissioner’s Restricted List.

 

January 10  According to reports, the Mets are bringing back outfielder Jay Bruce by agreeing to a 3-year $39 million dollars contract. The deal also includes a limited no trade clause. Last season Bruce hit .254 with 36 hrs and 101 rbis with the Mets and Indians. The Mets traded Bruce to the Indians last August. The deal is pending a physical.

 

December 22  The Mets and General Manager Sandy Alderson agreed on a 2 year contract extension, financial terms were not disclosed. Alderson has been the GM of the club since 2010,  and led them to back to back playoff berths in 2015-16 and a World Series appearance in 2015. Sandy said “We have unfinished business to do.”

 

In an unexpected move, the Mets hired their former GM Omar Minaya to a special assistant to Sandy Alderson. Minaya will be consulted on player acquisitions, in charge of player development, and be an active member in the community. Omar was the GM from 2005-10 and signed such players as Pedro Martinez, Carlos Beltran, and traded for Carlos Delgado.

 

December 15  The Mets signed catcher Jose Loboton to a minor league contract with a Spring Training invitation.

 

December 14  The Mets drafted pitcher Burch Smith in the Rule 5 Draft, then traded him to the Royals for cash considerations.

 

The Mets signed relief pitcher Anthony Swarzak to a 2 year contract worth $14 million dollars.  Swarzak had a 2.33 ERA splitting the season with the White Sox and the Brewers. 

 

November 17  The Mets finalized Mickey Callaway’s coaching staff, they are;

Gary Disarcina (Bench Coach), Dave Eiland (Pitching Coach), Pat Roessler (Hitting Coach), Tom Slater (Assistant Hitting Coach),, Ruben Amaro, JR. (First Base Coach), Glenn Sherlock (Third Base Coach), and Ricky Bones (Bullpen Coach).

 

November 4  The Mets exercised their team $8.5 million dollars option on infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and their $7 million dollars option on pitcher Jerry Blevins.

 

The Mets released outfielder Nori Aoki.

 

October 23  The Mets named Mickey Callaway as their 21st manager in club history. Callaway received a three year contract and is very excited to be the Manager of the Mets. For the past 5 seasons Callaway was the Pitching coach with the Indians and learned from the Indians Manager Terry Francona. 

 

October 22  Reports indicated the Mets will name Mickey Callaway as their next manager. Callaway has been the Indians pitching coach since 2013

 

October 9  The Mets announced they purchased the Syracuse Chiefs, the triple A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. The Mets will move their Triple A team from Las Vegas to Syracuse at the start of the 2019 season.

 

David Wright had a back surgery called Laminotomy. This procedure will help to prevent future back injuries.

 

October 3  The Mets fired Head Trainer Ray Ramirez after a season in which they had a ton of injuries. The Mets have had a lot of injuries for the past several seasons.

 

Former Mets manager Terry Collins has accepted a role in the Front Office. His role will be a Special Assistant to the GM. Collins job includes the restructuring of the coaching staff in Triple A. Collins resigned as manager at the end of the season.

 

The Mets reassigned pitching coach Dan Warthen in the organization. Warthen had been the pitching coach ever since 2008.

 

October 2  SNY analyst Keith Hernandez will join FOX for their postseason coverage.
