March 25  Mets released P. Donovan Osborne

March 17  Mike Piazza was suspended 5 games and fined $1,000 by MLB for his involvement in the March 12th brawl against the Dodgers.  Piazza charged the mound after Guillermo Mota hit him with a pitch.  Piazza also went into the Dodgers' clubhouse looking for Mota after the fight.  The suspension will start on Opening Day, but Piazza said he will appeal it.  Jeromy Burnitz also was fined $500

February 22  Mets signed lhp. Donovan Osborne to a minor league contract, financial terms were not disclosed.  Osborne did not pitch in 2001 and 2002 because of injuries.

February 20  Mets signed 1b/OF Tony Clark to a minor league contract and invited him to Spring Training.  Clark will be an insurance if Mo Vaughn gets hurt, plus he will experiment the outfield in the spring.  Clark's best years came when he was with the Tigers in the late 1990's.  His best season was in 1998 when he hit .291 with 34 hrs and 113 rbi.

February 14  Mets signed both Inf. Jay Bell and P. David Cone to minor league contracts and invited them to Spring Training.  Bell intends to win the 3rd base job.  Bell played a very little due to injuries with Arizona last season.  Cone, coming out of 1 year retirement, thinks he can still pitch again or at least he wants to go out on his own terms.  Cone was 9-7 with a 4.21 ERA with the Red Sox in 2001.  Cone pitched 6 seasons with Mets in the late 80's and early 90's, his best year was 20-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 1988.
