SPRING TRAINING NEWS
April 1 Johan Santana is named the Opening Day
Starter.
March 26 The Mets
signed pitcher Chris Young to a minor leagues contract.
March 20 The Mets sold
12 minority shares to investors. Also the Mets repaid the loans they received
from Major League Baseball and Bank of America.
March 19 Owner Fred Wilpon settled out of court in his case against Bernie
Madoff. Wilpon will have to pay $162 million dollars
over the next five years, but none for the first 3 years. Wilpon hopes
to recover some if not all of it
March 12 Pitcher Tim Byrdak has a torn misicus that
requires surgery in his knee. He will be out six weeks.
Third
baseman David Wright received a cortisone shot in his
rib cage, it is still unknown when he will start to play baseball.
March 5 First baseman
Ike Davis has a condition called Valley Fever; a lung infection that causes
fatigue. However Davis has no
symptoms yet. Valley Fever is
commonly known in the Southwest United States.
March 3 Outfielder Scott
Hairston injured his oblique muscle during the team’s intrasquad
game. It is the same injury that he had last season that sidelined him in
September. It is unknown the extent of the injury.
Third
baseman David Wright also missed today’s game because of a minor rib cage
injury.
February 27 Principle Owner
Fred Wilpon addressed the media saying among other
things that he still wants to own the team for a very long time.
Wilpon sold seven shares of the team.
Today
was the first official workout.
February 25 The Mets will
wear two patches on their uniforms this season; one is to celebrate their 50th
anniversary. The other one is for Gary Carter, the
players will wear a number 8 patch.
Over
2,000 people, from current Mets and management to some members of the 1986
championship team and ex ballplayers attended the Gary Carter’s memorial
service in Palm Beach Florida, Gary died of brain cancer on February 16.
February 20 Pitchers and
catchers are reporting today, first official workout is on Wednesday.
Gary
Carter’s memorial service will be on Friday, a sizeable Mets contingent
will be going. Gary died of brain cancer on February 16 at the age of 57.
