SPRING TRAINING NEWS

 

March 28  Pitcher Johan Santana may have thrown his last pitch for the Mets and the remainder of his career might be in jeopardy. A MRI revealed Santana most likely retorn the Anterior Capsule in his pitching shoulder and surgery is a strong possibility. Johan threw the only Mets no-hitter on June 1, 2012.

 

Bobby Valentine, who managed the Mets, joined SNY as a pre-game analyst. He will work about 12-15 games.

 

The Mets will honor Hurricane Sandy’s victims and the first responders during the pre-game ceremony on Opening Day.

 

March 27  The Mets traded pitcher Elvin Ramirez to the Angels for cash considerations.

 

March 26  Pitcher Shaun Marcum has an impingement in his shoulder and is unknown whether he will make his first start of the season.

 

March 25  Executive Vice President Dave Howard is leaving the club to become the president of MSG Sports.

 

March 21  The Mets officially named David Wright Team Captain. Wright is the fourth captain in Mets history; past captains were Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco.

 

Manager Terry Collins announced Jonathon Niese as the Opening Day starter.

 

March 15  Third baseman David Wright suffered an intercostal right muscle strain and will be out from 3 to 5 days at minimum. His status for Opening Day is questionable.

 

February 27  Pitching prospect Zack Wheeler suffered a mild strain of the oblique muscle and is day to day.

 

February 25  Shortstop Ruben Tejada sustained a strained right quad and is expected to be out for a few days.

 

February 24  Pitcher Pedro Feliciano has a small hole in his heart, non life threatening, and will be sidelined for two weeks.

 

February 22  Citing an “overall condition issue” pitcher Johan Santana’s first spring training start has been pushed back two weeks. His opening day start may now be in jeopardy.

 

February 18  Second baseman Daniel Murphy is experiencing discomfort in his rib cage and is likely to be out for a week.

 

The Mets resigned pitcher Justin Hampson to a minor league contract.

 

February 13  Owner Fred Wilpon stated that the financial troubles are in the past and the team can spend as much as they want. We will see about that.

 

Pitcher Frank Francisco has elbow inflammation and is out indefinitely. Manager Terry Collins named Bobby Parnell as the closer for the immediate future.

 

February 11  Pitchers and Catchers reported to camp.
